Our Curator’s Top 5 Fall Decor Updates

Words by Jody Hume | 8.5.14

As we head into fall, we’re looking to breathe fresh life into our wardrobes — and our interiors. Enter Brittany Gersh. As our Senior Specialist for fine art at The RealReal, Brittany pores over all of the paintings, sculptures and mixed media offerings that enter our offices, and she’s using her expertise to give your home an update with some of our standout contemporary selections. “There’s been a growing trend merging art and design,” she says of her choices, which include multi-functional works such as Visionaire’s light box and Mickalene Thomas’ Lena blanket. “It’s about how you interact with art and making every corner feel beautiful. These pieces conflate those two worlds.”

Each one of Brittany’s selections is guaranteed to make a room feel completely different, but if you’re looking for additional ways to invigorate your decor this fall, it can be as simple as switching up a frame or displaying a piece in a new way. “Try repositioning it,” Brittany suggests. “For example, if you put hanging art on an easel, it becomes more like an object and changes how you engage with it.”

Click through Brittany’s picks above to find a piece that catches your eye, or peruse other selections. Having a hard time deciding what might work best in your home? Consider her advice as someone who evaluates art everyday: “If you think of your style as traditional or contemporary, look for art that complements that aesthetic,” Brittany says. “But ultimately, find a piece that you love. If you do that, then it will naturally fit with the other pieces you love.”
