The Top Outerwear Trends for 2024

1.15.24

As much as we love peeling off layers when summer rolls around, there is something so exciting about jacket season. Whether you live in a place where wearing a coat is limited to a month or two of the year—or somewhere that has you chronically bundled up in a jacket—there are plenty of 2024 coat trends worth copying.

Luxury outerwear is always a worthy investment. A coat is the show-stopping finishing layer that completely pulls together a look, and nothing turns heads quite like a bright pink puffer or suede trench with feathers on the sleeve cuffs. Even minimal outerwear can be worthy of applause when it’s cut and tailored perfectly. Plus, as far as cost per wear goes, coats and jackets make the most of your dollar. If you’ve been patiently waiting for 2024 jacket trends to drop before you settle on a piece of designer outerwear, let the online shopping spree commence.

Shoppers after a grunge-inspired moto jacket or anyone looking to replace their 10-year-old black wool coat with something fresh are in luck. If you’re an avid coat collector, the 2024 outerwear trends on the horizon will please just about everyone.

Wrap Up in These 2024 Outerwear Trends

Your coat closet is about to get a whole lot cuter. Shop these coat and jacket trends that’ll make you want to cozy up year-round.

Leather Trench Coats & Leather Bomber Jackets

Leather trench. Freaking out a little thinking it’s a little too Matrix-esque? We’d argue anyone can pull off a black leather trench but don’t sweat it. Brands such as Hermès had models in ultra-chic red leather trenches walk down its SS24 runways as well as coats with a mix of maroon gingham and leather. Black isn’t the only shade this trend can be interpreted. Khaite also took a turn with leather trenches, adding a belt to cinch the waist and blending it with the oversized blazer trend in its collection.

Trench coats in general are seeing new twists in 2024. If leather isn’t your thing, why not a floor-dusting trench, something with oversized shoulder pads, various layers or ruffles, or a flared hem? These aren’t the plain khaki trenches were already so used to—even those are now available with a leather sheen, taking khaki to a new level.

As far as 2024 trends go, you can’t really turn your head without seeing leather bombers either. On the streets, in stores, and on runways, moto jackets have well and truly taken over. Prada, Chloé, and Stella McCartney are just three of the many fashion houses that had these in their lineups, too.

“Cozycore” Jackets

Frivolity can be fun in fashion, but when it comes to coats and jackets, functionality should really come first. It’s one thing to look fabulous, but when you’re shivering that goes out the window. That’s where cozycore jackets come in. This trend is essentially the comfort of a blanket wrapped into the sleek silhouette of a coat and has been seen in multiple variations from a wide range of brands.

Much of this includes loose-fitting jackets trimmed with faux shearling or containing an inner lining full of it. Cozycore also looks like padded puffers and longline coats reminiscent of comforters. It’s one of the many reasons the iconic scarf jackets from Toteme haven’t lost popularity either.

Red and Pink Coats

Two color trends are markedly noticeable in outerwear trends this year. Those are red and pink coats (which will be grouped together for ease) and chocolate brown, which will be discussed below. It’s a nice change from what shoppers are normally accustomed to during fall and winter—read: black, gray, and navy.

A pop of red or fuchsia on a gray February day is much more exciting than a neutral. Well, at least both neutrals and bold hues deserve precious hanger space in your closet. When seeking out inspiration for injecting this tone into your closet, look to Hèrmes, Christopher John Rogers, Roberto Cavalli, and Bottega Veneta. Speaking of which, Bottega Veneta had a bright orange version, too, if you want to go one more step down the rainbow.

Oversized Blazers

Oversized can be translated in a couple of different ways. One option is to select a blazer that’s (intentionally) a little too big on all fronts. Or, you can choose one feature to go wild with. This could be a classic mega shoulder pad look while the rest of the blazer is fitted or a blazer with sleeves that are flared and flowing.

Quite a few brands took this on board for this coming spring and summer. Miu Miu, Versace, Marni, Carven, Jil Sander, Tory Burch, and Prada are just a few names that embodied the trend. For an out-of-this-world statement piece, just look to Loewe for its blazer-meets-bag jacket.

Chocolate Brown Jackets

This warm and cozy color (subtly) infiltrated closets this fall and it isn’t going anywhere either. With so many different tones of brown available, there is a shade out there that’ll look good on everyone. Chocolate brown has been spun into long wool coats, leather moto jackets, tweed blazers, as well as puffer coats. So no matter what kind of outerwear you’re trying to source, you’ll likely be able to find it in an earthy brown.

The beauty of chocolate brown is it’s not as stark as black. So even when spring arrives, you won’t feel like you’re hanging onto winter while wearing this shade. Loewe, Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, and even Celine showcased shades of brown—pointing to the idea that this hue will easily transition from autumnal and wintery ensembles to those fit for spring and early summer.

Statement Puffer Jackets and Coats

Not everyone gets to defrost after February. For many people, the winter cold lasts long into what’s considered to be “spring.” That’s why designer coats in insulated puffer material are always going to remain an entryway hook staple. That doesn’t mean you have to opt for another plain black parka though. There are plenty of quilted, floral, abstract, shiny, and neon-colored options that you’ll be swapping your boring winter coat out for immediately.

It’s more than just pattern and color. Statement puffers can be found in a unique cut, too. It could have a waisted silhouette, a vest cut-out up top, or marshmallowy quilted padding. While expected names like Moncler and The North Face have dropped puffer coats, other luxury jackets in the form of puffers appeared from Gucci and La DoubleJ. That’s not including all of the marshmallowy coats that cropped up during the autumn/winter shows.

Suede Coats and Jackets

A variety of different suede coats have appeared, ready to go for 2024. There is a mix of classic suede jackets with patchwork and fringe, but also newly reinvented silhouettes. For instance, suede blazers made their mark on the runway, which is an unexpected twist on officewear. The soft material also appeared on trench coats and blazers, too.

Brands like Gabriela Hearst, Coach, Loewe, Ashley Williams, and Miu Miu have plenty of choices and offer numerous examples of how to style a suede jacket or coat for a modern-day outfit. While they’re certainly inspired by the ’70s, it doesn’t always have to have this kind of vintage spin.
