How to Wear Loungewear Without Looking Lazy

Words by Jody Hume | 5.26.18
Keeping it casual has never been easier, what with the fashion world’s embrace of loungey essentials like hoodies, track pants and luxe pajama tops. Everyone from Luka Sabbat to Jonah Hill has become an icon bridging the gap — between high and low, formal and informal, heritage and street — in true hype luxe style. But since wearing your bathrobe or PJs in public is generally frowned upon (and formerly reserved for sick days), staying elevated from head to toe is crucial. Fear not. Perfecting polished slouch is the name of the game here, and we’re not one to shy away from a sartorial challenge. Read on for Men’s Merchandising Manager Mandy Rivas’ tips on how to whip up some cozy outfits that will turn heads in the best way possible.
The Hoodie

Beloved by the youth and industry insiders alike, a hoodie can quickly read as sloppy when matched with old kicks and worn-to-death sweats. Take it up a notch with clean, crisp contrasts. “Mix coveted hype brands like Anti Social Social Club with heritage favorites that are really making a comeback,” says Rivas. Burberry’s signature check adds an unexpected touch, pulling the look together with a sophisticated pattern. “If you’re a man constantly on the go, stick to hoodies and bombers for comfort,” notes Rivas, “but make sure you anchor the ensemble with classics.”
The Track Pant

Breathable and light, track pants are traditionally a wardrobe staple for the jock who favors the field above all else. But whether they bring back unpleasant memories of high school gym class or a wave of nostalgia for the good ol’ athletic days, this streetwear must-have is more versatile than you might think. “Athleisure isn’t going anywhere, and the track pant is a piece you can wear year-round,” says Rivas. “Dress it up with a polo, loafer and jacket combo, or layer up with a T-shirt, embellished denim shirt and clean white sneakers.” Let your accessories do the talking with an LV monogram crossbody or a logoed-out Gucci messenger.
The T-Shirt

Nothing is more universal or straightforward than a T-shirt. But if you’re used to a more tailored approach when heading from desk to drinks, the task of incorporating the common tee into your regular outfit rotation might seem like a moot point. “This trend is all about effortless dressing,” advises Rivas. “You want a T-shirt that looks like it’s been worn a million times but is still in mint condition.” Go for a bright color or a surprising print and then add a finely crafted leather belt — or two — along with relaxed trousers and a refined carry-all.
The Pajama Set

“Silk pajamas are the new athleisure,” says Rivas. “But unlike normal athleisure, they feel more luxe, given the fabric. You’ll look like you’re on vacation at a five-star resort, and feel like it too.” Who, you might ask, would dare to wear sleepwear anywhere other than at home? Only the boldest and bravest. “I encourage everyone to test-drive this trend for summer,” says Rivas. “If you’re not down for the full look, mix a pajama shirt with denim shorts, or pants with a T-shirt.” And always finish it off with a statement shoe like Gucci Princetown slippers.
The Robe Coat

In search of the perfect low-key look? Opt for a robe coat. Lightweight and optimal for layering, a robe coat is a key laid-back essential to keep in your arsenal. “This is one of my favorite trends right now,” says Rivas. “It’s an easy way to polish off any loungewear piece, from concert tees to joggers, and it adds a coordinated cool factor when paired with matching shorts.” Don’t forget to flex with your rarest sneakers (we recommend unparalleled Off-White x Nikes, chunky Balenciaga Triple S sneakers or sleek Gucci Aces).
