Behind the Scenes at a Gucci-filled Personal Styling Appointment in LA
Aren’t so many things more enjoyable when someone else does them for you? Meals are better when someone else makes them. Music sounds extra meaningful when someone else plays it. Well, the same can apply to your outfit. Enlisting someone else to find the right pieces for you can change your look, maybe even your whole outlook. But you don’t want just anyone stocking your closet; you want an expert. At our stores in LA and NYC we have Stylists you can meet who are just that. To give you a behind-the-scenes look, we followed PR Consultant & Co-Founder Ashley Allen on an appointment with LA Stylist Robyn Morgan. Read on to learn how it works and see the amazing pieces that could go straight from our stores to your wardrobe (ahem, Gucci and Acne).
Robyn Morgan, Stylist
TRR: Robyn, what is your background in styling?
RM: I’ve done everything from commercials and fashion editorials to personal styling and music videos. I’ve worked with clients including Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, and Destiny’s Child, but I also love doing personal styling for private clients. I really think you can transform people’s lives through fashion.
TRR: How does a personal styling appointment work?
RM: It all starts with a client contacting us to request an appointment at one of our stores. I like to get to know my styling clients beforehand, so I gather information on what they’re looking for — do they need an outfit for an event, an upgrade to their everyday work wardrobe, something for a trip they’re taking — and get an idea of their lifestyle. Once I have all this, I can pull the perfect items, and have them all set up for the appointment (which starts with champagne, coffee or tea, of course). We also do a personal tour of the store so clients can pick out anything to try on that stands out to them. I help them with each look, making adjustments as needed, and hopefully the client leaves happy with me and their new purchases!
Ashley Allen, Sorella Consulting Co-Founder & PR Consultant
TRR: What were you looking for in your styling appointment?
AA: I wanted to find new stand-out pieces to add to my wardrobe. I was looking for items that are versatile and can be worn for work and leisure.
TRR: How would you describe your style?
AA: Chic but simple. I like to look and feel comfortable and put together. I’m a mix of girly and classic.
TRR: Robyn, what did you pull for Ashley?
RM: Ashley was searching for work looks, but also travels a lot, so I pulled separates like skirts and blouses with fun details for meetings and dresses for evening cocktail and gala. For travel and downtime, we looked at a couple pairs of RE/DONE jeans, rocker tees and leather jackets for weekend style.
For The WeekendAcne Studios Leather Moto Jacket | Chanel Vintage Quilted Waist Bag
AA: I had been wanting a new leather moto jacket so the Acne leather jacket was an amazing find. It was brand new with tags! The cut is perfect — fits me like a glove — and the color is special but also neutral. Such a great find and buy! I’m all about a waist bag and Chanel so combining the two was beyond.
RM: I love the chocolate brown color, which is a great alternative to the common black leather jacket — it’s still neutral and works with everything. A Chanel waist bag feels very current and is perfect for someone who’s on the go and wants to be hands-free.
For EveningRebecca Vallance Lace-Trimmed Dress
RM: A great-fitting black dress is a must-have. This hits below the knee and has a feminine lace detail, which is subtly sexy. The zipper back detail and slit give it just the right dose of edge. You should always have at least one statement clutch with fun detail, like the long tassel on this one by The Row.
AA: Chicest black dress. Incredible fit and feel. The clutch was classic with a touch of flair.
