Expert Opinion: Our Fashion Month Predictions

Words by Jody Hume | 9.5.17
A designer’s job is to present a good collection, but the most iconic creatives go above and beyond their title role to deliver inspiration, surprise, and if we’re lucky some serious shock factor. It’s what keeps the fashion world engaged and fascinated, always looking for opportunities to out-do themselves and make waves that ripple out to create a frenzy. Karl Lagerfeld has taken us from under the sea to blasting off to space, Vetements has collaborated with just about everybody, and we’re all going to be wearing red head-to-toe before we know it. This time of year always gets us excited about what’s coming next and reflecting on our favorite moments past, so we’re sharing a few musings around the office for the Spring/Summer ’18 shows at Fashion Month, kicking off with NYFW next week. Sure, some of them may seem far-fetched, but the greatest part about fashion’s current state is that they just might be crazy enough to come true.

Vetements X ???

“For the past few collections Vetements has made the uncool cool, resurrecting Ed hardy-style designs, Juicy Couture velour track suits and even the humble DHL shirt. I think for this next season they will collaborate with none other than … Walmart! I’m also predicting collections with A/X and Jimmy Choo (which I believe is in a lull at the moment). Overall, I think we’ll see a lot more of the influence of the early aughts on the runway in the best/worst way.”

Karl’s Next Big Idea

“I love that Karl Lagerfeld develops wild thematic elements for his shows at Chanel. The kind of creativity that makes mundane things larger-than-life is what draws me to fashion in the first place.  The space sendoff was amazingly over-the-top and the Chanel grocery store was pure, fun genius. Being from San Diego where we have one of the biggest fairs in America, I’d love to see Karl bring it back down to earth with the Chanel County Fair, complete with Coco cotton candy, neon signs, games and maybe even a carousel for old times sake.”

The All-Yellow Takeover Continues

“I’m waiting to see if yellow becomes the go-to color of the spring runway shows. Mustard is one of the big shades coming out of fall, and with all of the fascination around Raf Simons’ new Calvin Klein rebranding and the bright yellow walls in the revamped New York flagship store, I think the future could look very sunny, indeed.”

Designers Aren’t Done Throwing It Back

“I think the SS18 shows will be all about returning to a brand’s original heritage and design DNA, with a twist. I’ve been seeing a shift over the past couple seasons as fashion houses see new design heads at the helm such as Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga bringing back silhouettes found in the brand’s archives.  With so much disposable fashion and an uncertain runway show cycle, I think designers are starting to crave some stability by going back to their roots and figuring out how to add their own trademark.  Then there’s Tom Ford who is making his return to New York fashion week this season where he most certainly will take us all for a ’90s Gucci nostalgia ride.”

Staples Get A Shake-up

“There were some really amazing plaid suit sets all over the 2018 runways that I think are going to make a big appearance this fashion week on the streets. I saw great versions from Balenciaga, Fendi, and even some contemporary brands like Tibi and Off-White. I’d love to see how some of my favorite influencers accessorize that look. I’m obsessed! I also think we’re going to get a lot more of that sock-style bootie that was introduced last season. That style can be tough to pair since it doesn’t work with everything so I’m definitely looking forward to getting some more inspiration there.”
