Luxury Consignment Report: What to Sell by Chanel

Words by Jody Hume | 3.3.15
One of the most popular luxury brands on The RealReal, Chanel is known for its timeless designs and perennial reign at the forefront of fashion. Iconic under both Coco and Karl, Chanel pieces are constantly in demand. Known for borrowing from the boys and popularizing the little black dress, Mademoiselle Chanel’s pioneering ideas still exert influence on the fashion world today, while Karl Lagerfeld infuses his runway collections with iconic house codes as well as of-the-moment updates. With It models like Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner walking the runway, and celebrities from Rihanna to Julianne Moore (who recently received her best actress Oscar in custom Chanel) wearing his designs, Lagerfeld’s handbags, accessories and couture creations for Chanel remain coveted commodities.
With a new season on the horizon, and so many icons to choose from, we asked Women’s Category Director Sasha Skoda what to sell by Chanel now. Read on to discover what shoppers are waiting to buy and which pieces will get you the highest return on your investment.

Chanel Handbags

Chanel handbags belong to the increasingly rare class of items you can’t purchase online. “The RealReal is one of only a few places to buy guaranteed authentic Chanel online,” says Skoda. Because of this, they remain in high demand and command a high percentage of their resale value. “The Boy Bag has the highest resale value. It sells for up to 95% of retail.”

Next up: the classic 2.55 Medium Double Flap Bag. “This is our most sought-after Chanel handbag appearing on the most waitlists and with the highest number of obsessions.”

Also popular with buyers is the Grand Shopping Tote (aka the GST). Chanel Grand Shopping Tote Consignment“This bag is a slightly lower price point than the 2.55. It retails for  $2,900 where the 2.55 retails for $6,000, making it the most accessible classic Chanel bag you can get your hands on.” But the Grand Shopping Tote’s popularity goes beyond logos, suggests Skoda: “It’s super roomy, making it a great everyday tote that buyers look for.”
On the flip side of Chanel’s timeless handbags, there are the house’s limited edition collector’s pieces. Often designed for specific collections (like the Lait de Coco bag from the Fall 2014 supermarché-themed show), the demand for rare or straight-off-the-runway pieces is so high they can sell on the site within minutes.

Chanel Shoes

The epitome of French girl chic, Chanel’s flats, especially classic cap-toe and espadrille styles, prove the most popular footwear turned out by the brand.

Chanel Flats Consignment

“Ballet flats are always in style,” says Skoda. “They’re the perfect way to be comfortable, classic and stylish all in one.”

Chanel Clothing

When it comes to selling Chanel clothing, timeless pieces like the bouclé jacket are key. Worn by Mademoiselle Chanel herself in the 1950s, it’s been made modern by today’s fashion influencers who pair it with edgy accessories and downtown details. “Bouclé jackets are our most popular pieces. They’re classics loved by generations of women.”

Chanel Jewelry & Accessories

Coco Chanel famously advised that women take one thing off before leaving the house, but it hasn’t slowed demand for finishing touches bearing the house’s logos. Buyers snap up statement accessories like Gripoix or crystal cuffs, logo necklaces and earrings featuring interlocked Cs. “These pieces are an accessible way for logo lovers to invest in Chanel,” Skoda says.
