Trend Test: Learning to Love Yellow

Words by Jody Hume | 3.16.17
Is there any other color more controversial than yellow? For the fashion set, which is mostly used to wearing black on black à la Rei Kawakubo, the idea of wearing the vibrant shade can be more than a little daunting. But last September, droves of fashion houses from Pucci to Tibi to Gucci showed enough saffron, citrus and lemon chiffon to convince even the stubbornest of black-clad yellow-phobes to give the color a second look.
With the next season fast approaching, we asked our Email Marketing Manager Lisette Diaz to put the bold trend to the test. Scroll down to see her bright new look and read her take on all things yellow.

How often do you normally wear yellow?
I have a few mustard-colored pieces I like to pull out in the fall to add a pop of color in my otherwise dark wardrobe, but generally speaking, you wouldn’t normally catch me in a full-on yellow outfit.
What’s your favorite shade of yellow?
My favorites are bright yellow and dark mustard yellow, no in-betweens — like my personality.

What’s your favorite yellow-themed music?

Beyonce’s album Lemonade gets me going in my spin and boxing classes.

What did you like about testing this trend?
It showed me that yellow can have such a different vibe depending on how you wear it, from soft and feminine to bold and edgy.
What’s your favorite yellow food?
I love Meyer lemons. I grew up eating lemons from my parents’ tree and later found out they have an enormous amount of vitamin C and are great for digestion. Now I’m addicted!
Do you think you could ever be in a bad mood wearing head-to-toe yellow?
NEVER. Unless it rains.

Which piece would you love to take home?
I would have loved to take the yellow moto jacket with me. It’s such a bold and powerful statement piece. This was definitely my favorite look, especially with the Gucci pumps, so iconic!
Any tips for pulling off yellow for the folks at home?
Don’t be afraid to match yellow with yellow. Or if you’re not feeling so bold, pair one statement yellow piece with other primary colors or even a muted palette.
Will you be embracing the trend & wearing more yellow this spring?
Absolutely. It’s a color that could make anyone feel powerful and confident, which is always a good thing!
