The Trick to Styling 3 Men’s Outerwear Essentials

Words by Jody Hume | 10.6.17
Fall is finally here, and when it comes to cold-weather dressing, it’s often difficult to look put-together while piling on the layers. If you feel the tension of marrying form and function when you’re bracing for the cold, you’re not alone. The perfect coat is hard to find. But whether you’re suiting up for your morning commute or taking a leisurely trek around city streets, there are options for maintaining an on-point outfit. To help shed some light on the situation, we consulted our Men’s Merchandising Manager Mandy Rivas. Read on for her tips on how to style three essential outerwear picks.
The Overcoat

Christian Louboutin Kios Spikes Card Holder, $195; Opening Ceremony Oversize Wool-Blend Coat, $175; Louis Vuitton x Supreme 2017 Monogram LV Sneakers, $1,195

An overcoat can feel outdated because of its length, but complement it with the right pieces and you’ll instantly update the old standby. “Sneakers are really what make this look useful and more current,” says Rivas. “You can pair it with a T-shirt or layer it with a sweater, but the key factors are on-trend sneakers and a dress pant. I suggest wearing it with a pair of plaid slacks if the coat is solid, or a pleated solid pant for patterned coats.” Overcoats can run the gamut in terms of style and fit, so the styling possibilities are endless.
The Shearling Aviator

Gucci Soft GG Supreme Backpack, $3,600; Tom Ford Biker Shearling Jacket, $4,275; Saint Laurent Tinted Aviator Sunglasses, $195

Rugged and reminiscent of rebellion, the shearling aviator is the ultimate modern man’s outerwear pick for fall. “An aviator jacket like our selection here from Tom Ford is a great investment piece that you can have forever, and the shearling gives a nod to the holidays,” notes Rivas. “It’s really what you’re going to want to live in during the colder months. Pair it with a backpack like this Gucci one, which is one of the most covetable backpacks of the season.” Going casual? Wear it with your favorite denim. Or, if you’re looking to polish it up for drinks or the weekend, dress pants and a fitted boot will be your go-to pieces.
The Puffer Jacket

Valentino Leather-Trimmed Neoprene Sweatshirt, $475; Yeezy Onyx Military Boots, $425The North Face x Supreme 2016 Nupste Leaf Print Jacket, $1,295

In the past, the puffer jacket was strictly functional and regularly sported by the less-than-stylish set. Now, it’s a common streetwear staple that It-brands like Supreme are taking on. “The cool kids are wearing it,” says Rivas. “This The North Face x Supreme collaboration is very hype-luxe; it’s bridging the gap between heritage and streetwear.” The puffer is the perfect everyday outerwear for your morning commute or a low-key weekend. “In terms of outfitting, style this with your joggers or some cuffed denim,” adds Rivas. “And stick to a pair of boots or sneakers — no dress shoes — to keep it contemporary.”
