Most people would agree that sustainability is more important now than ever. We at The RealReal certainly do — it’s been a core value since the beginning to give new life to luxury items that otherwise might go the way of ever-expanding landfills — and Stella McCartney does too. That’s why today we’re incredibly excited to announce our new partnership and the launch of a new annual holiday: National Consignment Day.
From the outset, McCartney’s business has broken the fashion rules in favor of the environment. She’s proved that a luxury brand can be modern, relevant and completely vegetarian at the same time, and that a worldwide business can produce and sell goods while consistently taking into account its impact on the planet and its resources.
By joining forces with us as their preferred consignment partner, Stella McCartney is adding yet another sustainability initiative to their impressive roster that already includes avoiding the use of PVC and leather, using regenerated cashmere and membership in the Ethical Trade Initiative. “Sustainability is important to us and I’m excited to be partnering with The RealReal on this new sustainable program,” says McCartney. “We believe that consignment and recommerce can play a significant part in reducing the amount of raw materials that are required each year from our planet. This is key in our commitment to becoming part of a more circular economy. By ensuring that our products are used for the entirety of their lifecycle it is possible to begin to slow down the amount of natural resources currently being cultivated and extracted from the planet for the sake of fashion.”
To mark the occasion, we’re introducing National Consignment Day and the #neverthrowaway movement. It’s an annual holiday on the first Monday of every October that’s dedicated to the smart way to shop, earn money and support the lifecycle of luxury. If you haven’t ever consigned, consider doing it! (We just dared someone to shop only when they had consigned.) And if you’re a regular, join in by making your next appointment or sending in the things that have been accumulating in your ‘sell’ pile. We make it super easy to visit us in person to find out how much your items are worth, or schedule an appointment and we’ll even come to your home for a pick-up. We’ve also partnered with the GOOD+ Foundation where you can donate any items that can’t be consigned, so you can edit your closet in one fell swoop. And finally, share how you’re supporting sustainable fashion on social with #NationalConsignmentDay and #neverthrowaway.
