Winter is almost over, and once the sun is shining and the birds are chirping, a drab wardrobe is not going to cut it. Lighten up a little and incorporate some bright pops of color, surprising silhouettes and playful details this spring. Our Men’s Merchandise Manager, Mandy Rivas, has been scoping out the freshest menswear trends to share her tricks of the trade for creating the unique, seasonal looks featured in our latest lookbook Estate Of Mind. From crisp, tailored outerwear to your faithful new carryall, here are her top picks.
What was your inspiration for Estate Of Mind? MR: I’m loving the modern outdoorsy looks on the runways, and since athleisure continues to be a really strong trend it’s interesting to see it evolve. I’m really inspired by anorak jackets, but how do you dress it up? I love classic suiting, but how do you make something that doesn’t change very much feel spring forward? Adding a great spring layer like an anorak helps to find that perfect balance that feels interesting and new. The lookbook setting is this beautiful estate and garden, and we wanted it to feel like a day in the life of a man getting ready for work, lounging around his home, hanging out by the pool and what he would wear in those settings.
Since athleisure doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, what’s the best way to work it into a more professional settings like the office? MR: Now is an amazing time for fabric technology, and we’re seeing more comfortable fabrics that look really polished. Wearing tailored trousers in a soft material with a knit or sporty stripes is a good base and then you can layer under a blazer for even more structure. Sneakers are also a great way to mix it up and stay comfortable.
What’s your favorite piece from the lookbook? MR: I love the Aztech Mountain jacket because it feels very familiar yet fresh. Before the outdoor trend was about the hiking boot & city outdoorsmen silhouettes but now it’s becoming more about technical fabrics and taking on a more streamlined feeling — it’s a sign of the times that streetwear is becoming luxury, but for the more grown up man it seems like the outdoor sports brands are becoming the cool brands vs. streetwear brands like Supreme.
What’s the best spring accessory to invest in now? MR: It’s all about the weekender bag for a man; it’s masculine yet useful. It goes from work to night to weekend which makes it an excellent investment. But there’s also something to be said about a tote. Men are more comfortable now about carrying “man bags” and finding one that’s got a cool detail, like the color-blocked one in the lookbook, makes a statement while being smaller and more convenient.
What’s the best way to refresh a wardrobe for spring? MR: Go for bold color. Yellow is definitely the color of the season and it’s going to be everywhere. Menswear can be very neutral and muted, so it’s fun to test the waters and add bright pops of color in a wallet or shoe first!
