Style Director Molly Thompson took a his and hers approach for our new lookbook, Closely Knit, which features men’s and women’s pieces perfect for fall’s cooling temps. “We wanted to show cozy, luxe layers,” she says. “I like a tonal look — it’s a chic way to dress as an everyday uniform — so I tried to play with different colors.” The result is spread after spread of sleek ribbed sweaters and outerwear in classic neutrals and autumnal palettes. Thompson’s biggest tip for nailing the season’s layered look: “Bring back the turtleneck! Buy one in white or black and put it under everything. It makes an outfit feel sporty.” Click through the lookbook above for styling inspiration, and then keep reading for a quick behind-the-scenes tour of the set, courtesy of Thompson herself.
“Our models Chanel Gray and Micah Dix had never worked together, but it didn’t take long for them to warm up to each other — and then they wanted to Instagram everything! Chanel lives in L.A., but she’s from Arkansas so she’s a sweet Southern girl, while Micah is this cool San Francisco skateboarder.”
“It takes a couple hours to unpack clothing for a shoot, but we had double the amount of pieces on set this time, since we had both men’s and women’s looks. There’s always a ton of white button-ups, T-shirts, black pants — pieces that coordinate with anything.”
“This is our fall travel look. Denim jackets are a perfect year-round piece; you can wear them in spring and then layer them under a coat for fall or winter.”
“Hair and makeup artist Mandy Cassel kept Micah’s hair in line. I usually like no-makeup makeup, so we went natural for the shoot. For Chanel, we put a dusty pink color around her eyes with no mascara, so she looked simple and fresh.”
“We always take polaroids of each outfit, so we have an easy visual of the different looks that we’ve shot.”
“Micah changed behind the racks in between looks — he’s not really naked!”
