HOW MUCH CAN YOU EARN SELLING HERMÈS ONLINE? (HINT: IT’S A LOT.)SHOP HERMÈS
Few fashion houses are synonymous with luxury like Hermès. “Hermès is one of those brands where heritage is key — they’ve never sacrificed quality or craftsmanship,” says Women’s Category Director, Sasha Skoda. “Their items stand the test of time in terms of condition and resale.” And they sell fast. “We receive over 1,000 Hermès items per month,” Skoda says. “Of those items, roughly 70% sell in their first flash sale.”
So, how much can you earn selling Hermès pieces on The RealReal? Try over $40,000. Or at least that’s our estimate after we calculated the consignor commission (which is up to 70% of the selling price) on some of our most coveted Hermès items. Keep reading to see how they add up.
1. The Birkin
“Even though a classic black Birkin will always retain its value, the pop-color Birkins sell the fastest because they’re more rare,” says Skoda. “While some people purchase their first Birkin through The RealReal, we also have that customer who owns several and is looking for a color they don’t have in their collection. Because Hermès does made-to-order Birkins, you can find one-of-a-kind pieces you can’t get anywhere else — and since they’re unique, they can also sell for a higher price.”
2. The Bracelets
“Hermès bracelets and scarves are our top-selling Hermès items in terms of how many pieces we sell,” says Skoda. The RealReal’s most popular styles include the Collier de Chien (or CDC), the Clic Clac and enamel bracelets. “The CDC is as iconic to the Hermès brand as the Birkin bag,” says Graham Wetzbarger, Senior Director of Authenticity. “For this reason, it retains its value exceptionally well, as long as it’s been well-cared for — the more scratches on the hardware or discoloration to the leather, the lower the resale value. People go crazy for Clic Clac bracelets too.”
3. The Silk Scarves
“Each color on an Hermès scarf is individually screen-printed — they are pieces of art,” says Wetzbarger. “Hermès issues new designs every year and re-releases patterns from their archives, so there’s always a new one to discover.” As for which scarves sell fastest? “There are particular designs that collectors love, but anything with an equestrian motif or a scarf in bright Hermès orange or another vivid color will always be popular.”
4. The Bearn Wallet
“When you’re spending this kind of investment on a wallet, you’re looking for something that exudes discreet luxury, and no one does it better than Hermès,” says Skoda. The Bearn wallet’s understated take on the brand’s signature ‘H’ fits that description perfectly. Since the style appears in everything from alligator to courcheval leather, note the materials. “Collectors are cautious of condition, so leathers like togo, clemence, box and epsom which are more durable are always popular,” says Wetzbarger.
5. The Oran Sandals
Even though the Oran sandals have a lower price point than most Hermès items, they’re an easy way to earn consignor commission — particularly as we enter warmer weather when customers are in the sandal mindset. “These always sell instantly when we have them on the site,” says Skoda. “The style is timeless.”
