As the CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Steven Kolb is at the heart of American fashion. From established icons of American design like Michael Kors and Diane von Furstenberg to buzzy up-and-comers like Public School and Creatures of the Wind, Kolb is surrounded by the country’s brightest designers in his job to support the American fashion industry in all its forms. From bolstering manufacturing in NYC’s garment district to helping emerging designers break into the industry with programs like the CFDA Fashion Incubator and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund (awarded last week to shoe designer Paul Andrew), Kolb is behind some of the organization’s most galvanizing efforts to make American fashion a driving force on the level of the world’s fashion capitals. So when he talks about what he’s learned and where he gets his style inspiration, we’re taking notes.
Watch the video above to hear about the elements of American design as well as film and (perhaps unlikely) TV icons that inform his personal style. You can see Kolb himself on TV alongside Anna Wintour as they meet the ten designers in competition for the next CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in the second season of Ovation’s The Fashion Fund which premiered last Wednesday.
