Back to Cool: 5 Kids’ Styles for the Classroom + the Playground

Words by Jody Hume | 8.18.16
After months of popsicle-fueled pool parties, family vacations and sleepaway camps, most kids are less than thrilled to return to school. Late mornings, slip n’ slides and backyard barbecues are replaced with strict bedtimes, sack lunches and homework. Perhaps the one silver lining when fall rolls around is a brand new wardrobe. For most, childhood is the last time in our lives when growing out of all our clothes does not result in a deep depression, but it’s also a time when personal style becomes established and we look for new and interesting ways to express ourselves. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up our style picks for five fashion-forward kids outfits to take on back to school.

1. The Future Street Style Star

Ray-Ban Sunglasses, $50; MSGM Bomber Jacket, $245; Mini Rodini Sweatshirt, $45; Stella McCartney Jeans, $45

Flared jeans, a graphic dad sweatshirt and a bomber jacket are staples for an on-trend yet laid-back fall wardrobe, and no street style star would be caught dead without a sleek pair of shades to block out the camera’s flash.

2. The Girly Girl

Dolce & Gabbana Dress, $675; Burberry Trench Coat, $225; Gucci Flora Slides, $110; Bonpoint Straw Bag, $75

For the best in modern femininity, look no further than Dolce & Gabbana. This sequined A-line dress bears a striking resemblance to the brand’s wisteria printed fit and flare number for spring 2016. Perfect for sophisticated mother-daughter twinning.

3. The Tiny Urbanite

Burberry Coat, $175; Burberry Jeans, $75; Paul Smith Junior T-Shirt, $45; Burberry House Check Sneakers, $125

This little guy rides the subway to school, knows where to find the best pizza in town and that the most important wardrobe pieces for any young city-dweller are weather-proof yet stylish outerwear and a great pair of sneakers.

4. The Little All-Star

Moncler Down Jacket, $275; Gucci Sweater, $95; Moschino Sneakers, $175; Armani Junior Sweatpants, $45

Blame Lululemon, SoulCycle or off-duty models if you will, but the athleisure trend is still going strong. Your little athlete will rule recess in trending high-top sneakers and a Moncler puffer jacket.

5. The Pint-Size Preppy

Burberry Pants, $65; Gucci Blazer, $145; Gucci Horsebit Loafers $130; Tartine et Chocolat Shirt, $50

For the surprisingly refined young dresser, chasing the latest trend just won’t do. Nothing says “back to school” like a collegiate blazer and timeless horsebit loafers.
