Trend Test: Leaving the House in a Robe Coat

Words by Jody Hume | 2.25.17
With the rise of athleisure, it’s become more and more acceptable to wear in public what would normally be reserved for a gym or yoga studio. But recently, designers have been taking this trend further, sending outerwear down the runways that’s even more comfortable than yoga pants or sneakers, namely coats that look like they could be bathrobes. Some have fancy details or edgy draping, while others look like more like straightforward loungewear, but either way, can you leave the house in them? We decided to find out (and threw in one straight-up classic white terrycloth bathrobe forgood measure). Read on to see what our trend testers thought.

What did you think of the robe coat — would you wear it again?
Yes, a camel Mara Hoffman robe coat I purchased last year has since become a closet staple. Now, with a growing pregnant belly, it’s a great topper to polish off any outfit.
Did you pick up any styling tricks?
My natural inclination would have been to choose a handbag with a pop of color, however I love the head-to-toe monochrome look with the Alaia tote, and the laser cut detail adds needed texture.
We love the robe coat with sneakers, but if you were to wear a different shoe with it, what would it be?
I love the easy look of these IRO sneakers paired with the Isabel Marant coat. I’d also love to see it with a metallic Stella McCartney platform loafer and a sheer silk sock, or (my personal go-to) a classic black suede Manolo BB pump. I’m typically a heels gal, especially to contrast with the volume of a large coat (and bump).

What did you learn about robe styling?
Keep it relaxed and easy — just act like you’re lounging at home!
Would you ever wear a bathrobe out in public?
Probably not, but I would not be upset if it became a trend in the future!
What about one by, say, The Row?
10,000% yes.
This looks like it could be your album cover shot. What would your album be called?

Your look involved a robe coat and also sweatpants. What’s the secret to making loungewear work if you want to wear it somewhere that’s not your couch?
I think the secret to making the look work is pairing casual pieces with something that will elevate it, like these satin Gucci pumps. As well as wearing it with confidence!
What would you keep in your robe coat’s pockets?
I would keep my cell phone and lipstick.
What did you think of the robe coat — would you wear it again?
Most definitely. I loved the look and now I can’t wait to buy one. I love that being casual is cool, because it’s so much easier and comfortable. Hoping this is a trend that stays around for a while.
