Spring Picks & Styling Tips from Glossier’s Emily Weiss

Words by Jody Hume | 3.20.17
If you’re like us, you probably already have several pink bubble wrap pouches filled with Glossier products floating around inside your bag, and you have Emily Weiss to thank for it. The founder and CEO of Glossier has been changing the face of beauty since 2010 when she started Into The Gloss, the must-read blog that offers a peek into its subjects’ makeup bags and medicine cabinets, but also into their personal style, their philosophies, and their lives. These days, beauty isn’t just about makeup — it relates to what you’re wearing, what you’re listening to, even what you’re eating (hello vegan ingredients) — and loving a brand means feeling immersed in it, an experience that Weiss is an expert at creating.  Naturally, fashion and beauty complement one another, and Weiss is no stranger to the former having gotten her start as a fashion assistant at Teen Vogue and W Magazine. So we jumped at the chance to ask her what she’s loving right now. Read on for her latest picks (and some career advice), then shop her edit on the site.
What are some up-and-coming beauty trends you’re seeing?
I think the no-makeup-makeup look is here to stay. Full brows, a little blush and fresh, dewy skin is a timeless, effortless (and efficient!) way to go.
Do you think trends in beauty and fashion are related?
Of course. Beauty and fashion work together as elements of personal style. In the same way that dressing in a really minimal way is a “look,” so is being completely bare-faced.
What are your favorite #RealRealScores?
I recently scored a red Céline sweater that I love to pair with jeans and black heels.

The Glossier philosophy is all about skin first, makeup second. What’s the biggest misconception about skincare?
Expensive is not synonymous with luxury — it’s all about finding what products work best for your skin.
You travel a lot. What are some of your best tips for packing your bag and your makeup bag?
Pack light and only bring only what you need. I always find myself reusing the Glossier pink pouches as safe containers for my beauty products — this way I don’t have to worry about anything spilling in my bag!
We’ve all read your beauty top shelf on ITG, but what are the top three items of your fashion top shelf?
A good pair of sneakers (right now I’m into Nike Cortez), a Naadam cashmere sweater, and Paige x Rosie Huntington-Whiteley jeans.
So many women, especially young women, look up to you as a successful entrepreneur who’s built a really cool brand they can relate to. What’s your number one piece of career advice for women?
Know what you don’t know. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you are in different areas and learn from them. There’s no need to ever pretend like you know it all.
