Luxury Consignment Comes to Detroit: See Our City Guide

Words by Jody Hume | 9.16.16
On the heels of our recent expansion in Arizona, we’re excited to announce we’re bringing White Glove consignment to yet another location: Detroit! And with roots in the city and a career working in Retail Management for companies like Cartier, Bulgari and Miu Miu, our newest Luxury Manager Elizabeth Belkin is the perfect match for local consignors. “I was  born and raised in the fashion world,” she told us. “My late mother Hattie was somewhat of a fashion icon in her day. She literally put Detroit on the fashion map! She was a brilliant retailer and I fell in love with the business through her.” Read on for Belkin’s Motor City recommendations from the hardest reservation to get in town to where to soak up art, culture, and Detroit’s burgeoning creative scene.

Do you have a favorite museum in the city?
The Detroit Institute of Arts is the epitome of culture in our city. With over 100 galleries, it is considered to have one of largest and most significant art collections in the US. From Egyptian art to contemporary art, there is something for everyone to view and enjoy. They have fabulous lecture programs, a movie series and spectacular events.  The building in itself is something to see. It is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful museums in the world. It is a beaux arts style and was restored in 2007 by famed architect Michael Graves.
Where is somewhere you always take out-of-towners?
I was lucky enough to attend Cranbrook, located in Bloomfield Hills, for my college prep. It is a truly magical place. On the campus, there is a world renowned art museum and graduate school along with a science museum. The campus is truly beautiful and my favorite place to go for a run or walk. It’s always on my list to take out-of-town friends!
Do you have a go-to salon or beauty destination?
Escova Salon in Birmingham. Loretta gives the best haircut and blowout in town and Jeffrey is the most brilliant makeup artist.
Is there a place you recommend to all your clients?
Tender in Birmingham has the most beautiful assortment of European and American designers. Cheryl and Karen Daskas are the two most hard working and dedicated owners and it really shows in their boutique.

Best spot for a drink?
The Rugby Grille at the Townsend Hotel.
Favorite restaurant?
I have two favorites in Birmingham: Bella Piatti for the best italian and such a fun atmosphere! Phoenicia has the most delicious Lebanese food and I have been going there since I was a little girl! In downtown Detroit, Selden Standard is a local farm-to-table with the most delicious drinks and a cozy atmosphere. It’s the hardest reservation to get in town!

Where is the best Michigan getaway?
Up north — Charlevoix or Harbor Springs.  You really feel like you are away from it all and can relax. The air is so clean up there!
Detroit is experiencing something of a creative renaissance. Where’s somewhere you can go to see that?
Shinola, which is manufactured and made in Detroit. The brand has become so well known and has helped to bring Detroit back into the spotlight. They have expanded their watch line to include bicycles and leather goods, and they have tours of their factory. It’s a must-see when you are visiting Detroit!
What’s your favorite thing about helping clients consign?
I love meeting new people and introducing them to The RealReal world. I love getting into people’s closets and helping them to understand what they should keep and what they need to consign. For many of my consignors, it is emotional the first time. I am very gentle and walk them through “letting go.” Once they get through it and see their items sell, they are addicted.  That is what happened to me!
