2016 TRENDS WE’RE EXCITED TO SAY GOODBYE TO

realstyle_582x360-6
What once seemed bright and shiny in our closets is beginning to fizzle like flat champagne as this year comes to a close. 2016 brought the good, the bad and the crazy, and with rapid fire trends and constant social media exposure it’s easier than ever to experience some major burnout. As we toast to a New Year, we’re chatting with our experts who are already wish-listing their new must-haves and dishing on what they’re ready to leave behind. Here’s everything we’re consigning from our closets and what we’re investing in, from accessories to home decor. Cheers!

What trend are you so over from 2016?
“I’m ready to move past the full prep look. It can be boring when worn head-to-toe. Military styles and plaid look much cooler when paired with a crisp white sneaker or interesting layers to make it a little more causal.”
What trend are you excited for in 2017?
“I think we’ll be seeing a lot of outdoor inspired trends next year as a natural extension of athleisure. I love how easy it is to make a causal piece look polished, and there are lots of great ways to experiment with that like pairing parkas with sleek winter boots or high-end sneakers with lighter fabrics for summer. I also love that fashion is taking a stance right now with political statements and graphics. I would never wear something I couldn’t get behind. I love that it’s coming into fashion to speak my mind and show what I believe.”
What is a classic you’ll wear forever?
“I’ve had one leather jacket for over 10 years, and I still get compliments on it. It’s not quite a moto jacket or bomber, it’s something in-between but I’ll probably wear it forever.”
What trend are you so over from 2016?
“A little athleisure is great, but I’m getting tired of the Vetements trend of drastic, over-the-top streetwear-inspired pieces. The idea is that they’re supposed to be wearable but they’re just not! Athletic clothes have a time and place, but I don’t always think it’s in the office or at dinner. Also velvet is beautiful, but I’m ready for a new textile. Satin is my new velvet.”
What trend are you excited for in 2017?
“I love seeing new takes on classic shirting. Whether it be off the shoulder, shirt dresses, or twisted styles they’re easy to wear anywhere and take you from am to pm. Also a good, colorful satin heel like Balenciaga’s fall/winter show or the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi! They look cool with jeans or dressed up for a night out.”
What is a classic you’ll wear forever?
“A wool plaid blazer is very current but also a classic.”

What trend are you so over from 2016?
“I have to say the off-the-shoulder tops seem pretty played out. Instead I would do one shoulder slipping out one side of an oversized sweater or wear a button down kind of just sitting on top of the shoulders. Also, there’s this thing going on right now where jackets and coats are being worn off the shoulder? Living in New York in December keeps this from being an option for me.”
What trend are you excited for in 2017?
“I’m pretty excited about the hoodie. There is something so cool about wearing a blazer with cropped trousers and heels and having a sweatshirt hoodie sticking out. I am also loving maxi-coats right now, it’s a great way to elevate an outfit.”
What is a classic you’ll wear forever?
Jeans and a t-shirt. If you adjust your denim correctly to the trend at the time you will always look relevant and effortless.”
What trend are you so over from 2016?
“I’d say anything overly trendy like bohemian, neon or punk.”
What trend are you excited for in 2017?
“Right now I’m searching for the perfect oversized statement earrings for New Year’s Eve, I’m really obsessed with Rebecca de Ravenel’s Les Bonbons earrings. Other trends I’m looking forward to are pearls and stacked pendant necklaces, which are both making a very big comeback in 2017.”
What is a classic you’ll wear forever?
“Some things just go together, like pendant necklaces with turtlenecks or lariats with a deep v-neckline. It’s sexy and classic.”
What trend are you so over from 2016?
“There’s been a big trend towards natural woods and pared down decor which can be beautiful, but since I’m exposed to so many heritage brands, antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces I think people should embrace more eclectic pieces.”
What trend are you excited for in 2017?
“This year was very minimal, lots of black & white, but I’m excited to see more color next year. Last year’s Pantone colors were pastel blue and pink, but this year is fresh green. I think it’s great to invest in pops of color, starting in easy places like throws or pillows.”
What is a classic to invest in forever?
“An Eames lounge chair. Everyone should own one. Or two! It fits any room whether it’s rustic or polished. Also i find people are intimidated by art and hanging it on the wall, but really all you need is the confidence to pick what you love. If you like something then it’s worth being in your home and showing who you are.”
